Ideal Hot Dog was started in 1980 by Nick Verikakis and George Mouratidis who had decided to go into business together not exactly sure what kind of restaurant it would be. During the time they were building their first location various friends and family would stop by and give them ideas about what foods Toledoans wanted/needed. There was a general consensus among their friends and guests that Toledoans missed Chili Mac since the old Chili Mac parlor closed in downtown years earlier. Nick and George made hundreds of small (5 lb batches) trials for eight months trying to perfect the recipe and calling in their friends and family who remembered the taste of Chili Mac before they finalized the recipe. Ideal Hot Dog has two locations run by George and Nick’s family now.
